FALSE: Photo does not show police officers in Kamukunji on December 7, 2022

By Fridah Okachi

A photo shared on Twitter on December 7, 2022, purporting to show a group of police officers in Kamukunji, Nairobi County is FALSE.

The photo had a caption suggesting that the officers were at Kamukunji grounds where Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya leaders, led by Raila Odinga were holding a consultative forum.

“Current state at #Kamukunji ground. This is bad. Dear president William Ruto and CS Kindiki let’s allow the constitution to take charge and don’t provoke the people power,” reads the caption of the photo we are fact-checking.

Mtaani Radio fact-check desk conducted a reverse image search on the photo and established that it was taken in Kisumu in July 2014.

The Christian Science Monitor published the image on July 9, 2014, with the photo description indicating that it was originally taken by Reuters during protests organised by the Coalition for Reform and Democracy in Kisumu.

This fact check was published by Mtaani Radio with support from Code for Africa’s PesaCheck and African Fact-Checking Alliance.
