FAKE: This KBC digital card purporting to quote Archbishop Anthony Muheria is not doctored

By Fridah Okachi

This digital card posted on Facebook and purporting to quote Nyeri Diocese Archbishop Anthony Muheria is FAKE.
The digital card with KBC branding claimed that the Archbishop had issued a statement on politicians attending church services.

“We want to appreciate the new administration for acknowledging the place of God and the Church in its establishment. However the government must also understand that there’s time for everything.

This is time to work, not to dwell on political events disguised as thanksgiving services,” the quote on the card reads.

Mtaani Radio fact-check desk looked into the card and established that it did not originate from KBC, as there was no record of it on the national broadcaster’s verified Facebook or Twitter pages.

Additionally, we found a statement by KBC distancing itself from the card under investigation.

“FAKE NEWS ALERT This image circulating online purportedly from KBC, is not from us. If it’s not on our official social media pages, it’s fake,” KBC posted.

The archbishop also disowned the card, terming it fake and inaccurate.
“This statement attributed to me is inaccurate. Please listen to clip. I hope the mistake is in good faith…,” he said.

The clergyman also shared a video of his recent interview on Citizen TV where he spoke on the political happenings in the country, but he did not make the statement we are fact-checking.

This fact check was published by Mtaani Radio with support from Code for Africa’s PesaCheck and African Fact-CheckingAlliance.
