This photo shared on X (formerly Twitter) supposedly of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga being crowned a Nigerian elder is ALTERED.
“Former PM @RailaOdinga has this evening been crowned as a special Osun-Osogbo elder at an invite-only ceremony held at a “sacred grove” along the banks of Osun River, Osogbo City, Nigeria,” reads the post dated 1 September 2023.
Osun-Osogbo is a Nigerian festival that happens annually to celebrate the goddess of fertility, Osun.
Mtaani Radio performed a Google reverse image search and established that the original picture is of Jean-Bédel Bokass, when he crowned himself Emperor of the Central African Republic.
According to Getty Images, the photo was taken on 4 December 1977.
The image was also published by the BBC and Huff Post.
