FAKE: This digital card purportedly quoting President Ruto is not from Kenyans.co.ke

By Evans Isohe

The publication has distanced itself from the card.

This purported Kenyans.co.ke digital card shared on Facebook and claiming to quote President William Ruto is FAKE.

The card bearing Kenyans.co.ke branding claims that Ruto is seeking to use civil servants’ November 2023 salary as tax.

“I am asking all public and civil servants, to allow me to use the November salary as tax. We use that money to boost our economy”. Sijui kama tunaelewana? (I don’t know if we are getting each other),”  the quote on the card reads.

To confirm the authenticity of the card, Mtaani Radio newsroom skimmed through Kenyans.co.ke Facebook and X account (formerly Twitter), but we did not find the card in question.

We, however, noticed that the media outlet published a graphic with a similar image on 27 October 2023, but it has a different quote.

On 31 October 2023, Kenyans.co.ke flagged the card and termed it fake.

“This post did not emanate from our media house. We flag it as FAKE. For official communication from http://Kenyans.co.ke, always visit the official website and verified social media pages,” the media outlet said.

Mtaani Radio examined a purported Kenyans.co.ke digital card shared on Facebook and claiming to quote President William Ruto and found it to be FAKE.

This fact-check was published by Mtaani Radio with technical support from Code for Africa’s PesaCheck newsdesk through the African Fact-Checking Alliance.
