Dagoretti, NAIROBI, KENYA -A sharp division has emerged among residents and traders in Dagoretti Sub-county following remarks by President William Ruto commending Nairobians for staying away from recent street demonstrations.
Speaking during the official commissioning of the newly completed Ngong Road Overpass near the Junction Mall, the Head of State praised city residents for maintaining peace and order, arguing that stability is the backbone of economic progress.

However, a section of Dagoretti locals has pushed back against the President’s assessment, painting a different picture of the reality on the ground.
While the streets remained largely clear of active running battles, local business owners contend that the quietness was driven by fear and tension rather than deliberate calm. Many shops remained closed, public transport was paralyzed, and casual laborers were unable to report to work.
Speaking to Mtaani Radio, James Kiandu, a Dagoretti resident, expressed his disagreement with the President’s remarks, highlighting the silent economic blow dealt to the community.

Beyond the economic hit, residents are grappling with deep anxieties regarding security operations in the area. Kiandu further alleged that the community is still in the dark over arbitrary arrests and suspected enforced disappearances that occurred during the protest period.

As the dust settles on the overpass launch, Dagoretti residents are now calling for independent investigations into reported cases of missing persons, urging the state to protect citizens’ constitutional rights while promoting genuine dialogue.
