The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains will hit Nairobi and other parts of the country starting Sunday, August 17, 2025, raising fears of flash floods, lightning, and property damage.
According to the advisory issued on Friday, August 15, the downpour is expected to intensify to over 20mm in 24 hours and may continue until Tuesday, August 19, before gradually reducing from Wednesday.
Residents in Nairobi’s informal settlements such as Kawangware, Kabiria, Kangemi, Waithaka, Mutuini, Ngando, Kabiro and other flood-prone areas have been urged to stay alert, as poor drainage and narrow roads make these areas highly vulnerable to flooding.
The weatherman has also singled out several other counties including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kakamega, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi as areas of concern.
Key safety advice from the Met Department:
- Avoid walking or driving through moving water.
- Keep away from open fields, tall trees, and grilled windows during storms to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.
- Residents living near rivers and seasonal streams should be extra cautious as water levels may rise suddenly, even if it is not raining in their immediate area.
- Watch out for strong winds that may damage roofs, uproot trees, or bring down weak structures.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and take early precautions to keep their families safe during this rainy spell.
