The ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has demanded the immediate resignation of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
This demand follows what ODM describes as “callous and despicable remarks” Kahiga made about the late party leader, Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a strong statement released Wednesday, Wanga condemned Kahiga’s comments, made during a funeral in Nyeri, accusing the governor of “celebrating Odinga’s death.”
Wanga stated that Kahiga’s comments were an insult to Odinga’s memory, given his lifelong fight for Kenya’s freedom and democracy. ODM emphasized that Kahiga, as a beneficiary of these freedoms, made “disgraceful and shameful” remarks.
Wanga also criticized Kahiga’s false claim that Western Kenya disproportionately benefited from government resources.
Calling Kahiga’s statements “bad manners, uncouth, pusillanimous and unacceptable,” Wanga argued his conduct was unbecoming of a leader and tarnished the Council of Governors (CoG), where he serves as Vice Chairman.
Wanga demanded Kahiga resign from his CoG position immediately, stating, “The CoG cannot have a reckless person holding such a position.”
She stressed that ODM would defend Odinga’s legacy, describing him as a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism who believed in freedom, devolution, and a united Kenya. Wanga concluded by urging leaders to show dignity and respect, emulating Odinga’s example.
Kahiga’s remarks have ignited significant political debate, with ODM insisting he take responsibility and resign from the CoG.
